Souness confident Liverpool star will be ‘outstanding success’ but Klopp admits ‘he needs time’

Souness praises Nunez

Graeme Souness is confident that Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is going to be an “outstanding success” following his move from Benfica.

Liverpool were forced to rejig their attack this summer as Sadio Mane made it clear following their Champions League final defeat that he wants to leave.

The Senegal international has got his wish as he has joined Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for around £34m.

As they always do, Liverpool have acted quickly to get their business done this summer. Watch and learn Man Utd.

Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho have been brought in along with Nunez. The Uraguay international is their marquee signing as he has joined them for a fee that could rise to £85m.

The forward was prematurely criticised after failing to score in certain pre-season games.

He silenced his doubters quickly though as he netted four goals in a friendly against RB Leipzig.

Nunez followed that up with a promising display against Man City in the Community Shield.

The 23-year-old scored Liverpool’s third goal in the 3-1 win and he also won the penalty that Mohamed Salah scored.

The Reds get their 2022/23 season underway against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Nunez is not guaranteed to start at Craven Cottage:

“Darwin is ready but that doesn’t mean he has to start. I don’t know about that. We still have different options,” Klopp said (via The Metro).

“He needs time to get used to a lot of things. He is already a real help. It went really quick. It was a proper pre-season training session for him, the first game.

“He said himself he was nervous at the beginning. From my point of view I sympathise with that a lot, it’s completely normal. You could see that, but he has settled pretty quickly.

“He’s had an impact, but the work will not stop here. He’s in the best possible place.”

Liverpool will be hoping Nunez hits the ground running in the league, especially with Man City signing Erling Haaland.

Club legend Souness is feeling optimistic about Nunez as he thinks the young forward is a “great addition”:

“The boy, Nunez, I think he will be an outstanding success,” Souness told talkSPORT (via Liverpool Echo).

“In terms of his size and he wants to run forward without the ball, I think he will be a great addition.”
