CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced today that the club has signed midfielder Ibrahim Conteh, pending league and federation approval.

Originally from Freetown, Sierra Leone, Conteh began his international career in 2014 playing four matches and scoring one goal for the Sierra Leone U20 squad. He made his senior team debut in a World Cup Qualification game in 2019.

“Conteh is an active two-way midfielder that can both add ball winning capability to our midfield and the ability to connect effective, dangerous passes going forward” explained Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. ” His addition will aid in our ability to recover balls in the middle of the field and transition into attack. We look forward to him adding to our group for the stretch run of the season.”

Conteh most recently made 10 appearances for Albion San Diego in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) 2022 season. He also started in Albion SD’s 2022 US Open Cup game against San Diego Loyal SC.

In 2020, Conteh joined Detroit City FC late in the club’s fall season. He made three appearances in the regular season and three appearances in the playoffs as Detroit City FC were crowned champions.

Prior to this, Conteh had an extended stint in Indonesia. He joined PS Barito Putera in 2016 and scored two goals in 11 appearances. While playing for PSIS Semarang, Conteh made 29 appearances with five goals and four assists. He also played two matches in the Indonesian President’s Cup and notched an assist in the domestic Indonesian Cup. Conteh then transferred to Persipura Jayapura in 2019 where he recorded one goal and two assists in 25 appearances.

“I am very excited to enter into the USL with Charlotte Independence to continue on with my football journey,” stated Conteh. “Coach Jeffries and all the players have made me feel very welcome and the level has been high and professional. I am looking forward to representing Charlotte, and I am confident in being a positive impact – winning games, getting to the playoffs and winning a trophy! I am eager to get going and represent my new club and fans alike.”

The Independence host Forward Madison FC this Friday, August 5 at 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Fans can purchase tickets at charlotteindependence.com.
