West Ham have £33.5m offer ‘accepted’ for midfielder; Burnley ‘reject’ opening Cornet bid

West Ham target Amadou Onana during a press conference

West Ham have had a bid accepted by Lille for Amadou Onana and are ‘close’ to agreeing a deal for Maxwel Cornet after Burnley rejected their opening bid, according to reports.

This summer, the Hammers have already completed the signings of Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes and Gianluca Scamacca, for around £80million in total.

After eventually getting a striker through the door in Scamacca, transfer rumours involving the Irons have died down.

However, they have come back in for Lille midfielder Onana after reportedly having a €23m bid turned down.

This is according to The Guardian correspondent Jacob Steinberg, who says the French club have accepted an offer of £33.5m from West Ham.

David Moyes has been on the search for a new midfielder as he seeks more depth behind Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

Mark Noble retired at the end of last season and Alex Kral returned to Spartak Moscow after an uninspiring loan spell, meaning there is space for a new midfielder in the Scottish manager’s squad.

Lille were reportedly hoping to receive €40m for Onana, but have decided to accept a bid worth an initial €35m (£29.3m) plus €5m in add-ons.

On top of Onana, Moyes is eager to sign a new left-sided attacking player and a left-back.

They had been linked with Filip Kostic, however, he is now ‘expected’ to stay at Eintracht Frankfurt.

In relation to a left-back, the Hammers are believed to be interested in Leicester City’s Luke Thomas after letting Arthur Masuaku join Besiktas on loan.

Blackburn Rovers forward Ben Brereton Diaz has been linked with the Londoners, as has Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet.

Newcastle United and Everton are also believed to be interested in Cornet, though it appears that West Ham are currently leading the race to sign the Ivorian.

The report adds that the Irons had a bid worth around £17m rejected by Burnley on Tuesday night.

Cornet has a £17.5m release clause in his contract following the Clarets’ relegation, which means West Ham’s bid is slightly bizarre, however, it will likely be an offer involving several instalments, with any release clause having to be triggered with one payment.

Despite their opening offer being turned down, West Ham are ‘close to agreeing a deal’ to sign Cornet.
