WASHINGTON, D.C. – D.C. United announced today that Pete Shuttleworth will join the club as an assistant coach pending receipt of his P-1 Visa. The Englishman joins Head Coach Wayne Rooney’s technical staff from Derby County Football Club, where he served as a vital component of Rooney’s coaching staff in the English Championship last season.

“Pete worked with me at Derby County during my time as manager there and he has experience with analysis, coaching, and recruitment,” Wayne Rooney, D.C. United Head Coach, said. “He’s someone I trust very much and he has a lot of qualities to help make the team better. It’s good to have him come in with me but it’s also good for the team and the club to get someone of Pete’s ability to help us improve moving forward.”

Shuttleworth started his career in 2006 after holding his first managerial job at Shirebrook Town FC, a semi-professional club in the Northern Counties East League Division One, at 27-years-old. Following his stint as manager, he joined Sheffield FC, the oldest soccer club in the world, as an assistant coach then held a similar role with Worksop Town FC as he worked his way up the English soccer pyramid. Following his time in the lower leagues, Shuttleworth joined Birmingham City FC in 2015 under Gary Rowett. After working two years as a scout, he became the Head of Tactical Analysis at Birmingham City FC in 2017 where he led pre-match preparations for the club through video analysis and game reports. Following five years with Birmingham City, the highly-rated Shuttleworth joined Rooney as a first team assistant coach and analyst at Derby County in 2020.

“Firstly, I want to thank ownership and Wayne for their trust in me to help propel the club forward in the assistant coach role,” Pete Shuttleworth, D.C. United Assistant Coach, said. “I enjoyed my time with Wayne at Derby County and fully believe that the style of play he implements will translate well to MLS. I was excited about the project here at D.C. United and look forward to the challenge of helping the club achieve great things under Wayne.”

Shuttleworth is a product of the Nottingham Forest (1988-1995) and Coventry City (1995-1996) Academies. He also represented Great Britain at the Triathlon from 2012 to 2016.
