Inactive Leicester ‘respond to Newcastle’s Maddison bid’ and agree to sell 11-year veteran

Leicester duo James Maddison and Kasper Schmeichel

Leicester City have responded to offers from Nice and Newcastle United for Kasper Schmeichel and James Maddison, according to reports.

The Magpies made a £40million bid to sign Maddison last week. After that was rejected, it was reported the club had come back with an improved offer.

Nicolas Pepe transfer could suit settled Arsenal, ambitious Newcastle and the man himself

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers was asked about the interest in his player; admitting that the 25-year-old is not someone he wants to sell this summer.

“He’s still very much a player here,” Rodgers said. “Naturally the players are sought after because they are talents. You see his performance, you see how happy he is and he’s not a player we want to sell.

“It’s not for me to put valuations on the players, it’s not my side, but that might just cover three-quarters of his left leg, that price. He’s a top player.”

Leicester reportedly value Maddison at £60m, while it is believed Newcastle’s second bid was worth around £45m in ‘staggered payments’.

According to Football Insider, the Foxes have turned down the Geordies’ returning offer.

While Leicester are obviously not happy to sell Maddison, they will reportedly entertain offers above £60m.

They are looking to raise funds in order to bring in some fresh faces this summer. The club are the only Premier League outfit yet to make a first-team signing in the summer transfer window.

Maddison has two years left on his current contract at the King Power and Newcastle are hoping to make the Englishman their fourth summer signing following the additions of Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman.

One player Leicester have agreed to sell is goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The Danish shot-stopper has been with the club for 11 years, making 478 appearances since joining from Leeds United for around £1.5m.

The 35-year-old has entered the final year of his contract and is now set to join French club Nice for an initial €1m.

Schmeichel is one of the most successful players in Leicester’s history. He helped them to promotion in 2013/14 before winning the Premier League title in 15/16.

The club captain also lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield in 2021.

Leicester will need to act fast in the transfer market as they begin the search for a new goalkeeper.

They were linked with Arsenal’s Bernd Leno, though it appears that the German is edging closer to a move to newly promoted Fulham.
