Aguero slams ‘strange decision’ from Man City to sell Sterling to Chelsea

Man CIty legend Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling celebrate

Man City legend Sergio Aguero has hit out at the Premier League club’s decision to sell Raheem Sterling to Chelsea this summer.

There has been a fair bit of transfer activity at the Etihad Stadium in the summer transfer window with Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega joining on permanent deals, while Julian Alvarez has finally joined up with Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Sterling, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus have been the high-profile departures with Fernandinho also leaving on a free transfer.

It has been reported that Man City got £47.5m from Chelsea for the signing of Sterling this summer with the transfer surprising many people.

Sterling provided 13 goals and five assists in 30 Premier League appearances last campaign with the England international hitting 131 goals in 339 matches in his time at Man City.

And Citizens legend Aguero – who retired last season on advice from doctors after being diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia – thinks Man City could be making a mistake by selling former team-mate Sterling.

Speaking on his Twitch channel, Aguero said: “I don’t understand the sale of Sterling. There are times they (City) make strange decisions.”

Haaland will be expected to score lots of goals this season after scoring almost a goal a game during his time at Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

And Aguero thinks Haaland is “too used” to playing in the German top flight after Virgil van Dijk gave him a tough game in their 3-1 Community Shield loss to Liverpool on Saturday.

Aguero added: “He was too used to Germany. Haaland thought he was alone, then Van Dijk arrived and said ‘welcome to the Premier League’.”

Alvarez, who Man City signed last January, is set to be a key part of the squad this season after he stayed on loan at River Plate until this summer.

On Argentina international Alvarez, Aguero continued: “Julian sent me a message to find out how life is in Manchester. I told him that he was going to be very cold!”

Aguero’s compatriot scored his first competitive goal for Man City in their loss to Liverpool at the weekend and he was happy to get off the mark.

Alvarez said after the match: “Obviously, I’m very happy for scoring my first goal with City, but that stays aside as we wanted to win the trophy.

“It’s tough, obviously we didn’t want to start this way. We need to keep working.

“It’s going to…
