FPL managers build their Gameweek 1 squads from front to back, but goalkeepers are widely overlooked, despite being a crucial cog in our teams. So, who are the best goalkeepers to select for the 2022/23 fantasy season?
First off, it’s worth noting that we’ve seen a change in goalkeeper pricing this season, with the most expensive assets coming in at £5.5m, which is a drop of £0.5m from previous seasons. That’s certainly going to make for some interesting decisions.
Last season’s Golden Glove winners, Alisson (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m) both come into play here, as does Spurs shot-stopper Hugo Lloris (£5.5m).
Analysing these options, Alisson has the superior save percentage rate (75.3%), but it’s likely you’ll want to own three outfield Liverpool options throughout this season, so he isn’t really a true consideration.
Given rotation fears at Manchester City, Ederson is a viable set-and-forget premium goalkeeper option, offering a slice of the best defence in the Premier League last season with guaranteed starts for just £5.5m. He’s the one to go for at this price point.
Looking further down the price range, we’ve seen plenty of top goalkeepers get a price drop to £5.0m, including Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy (£5.0m): he’s dropped by a full million in price for this campaign.
Again, he’s a great option to have for guaranteed starts in this solid Chelsea defence, which kept 16 clean sheets last season. The departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen do raise some concerns though, with Chelsea prone to defensive errors.
Jose Sa (£5.0m) is another goalkeeper worth considering at this price tag: he topped the goalkeeper save percentage last season at 79.3%, keeping 11 clean sheets. Wolves have a great opening run of six fixtures.
At this stage it’s important to note this important goalkeeper strategy: it’s generally not worthwhile to have two starting goalkeepers, unless their fixtures rotate nicely. Aim to spend a maximum of £9.0m across the two goalkeeper slots.
