Tumi Moshobane Named to USL Championship Team of the Week

SD Loyal Signs Goalkeeper Jon Kempin on Loan from DC United

July 26, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)San Diego Loyal News Release

SAN DIEGO – Midfielder Tumi Moshobane was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week after helping SD Loyal to a 2-1 win against Rio Grande Valley FC in a Week 20 match on July 23.

Moshobane scored the first goal of the match and later assisted in SD Loyal’s second goal scored by Evan Conway, proving to be the match-winner. Moshobane’s play helped his team to its 12th win of the season, propelling SD Loyal its best start in franchise history (12W-5L-4D, 40 points). SD Loyal also moved into second place with the win.

Against Rio Grande Valley, the South Africa native scored when he sent a volley from just outside the 18-yard box past RGVFC goalkeeper John Deric. Moshobane took a cross from Conway and didn’t let his left-foot chance go to waste, sending in his sixth goal of the season.

Moshobane returned the favor to Conway later in the match. Conway charged on a floating pass by Moshobane off a free kick and tapped the ball past Deric as he fell backwards for his fourth goal of the season.

In 21 matches this season, the speedy and nifty Moshobane has started in 17, racking up 1,356 minutes played. He has recorded six assists as he has often been an integral part of the team’s infield with his creative style of play.

Moshobane is the second SD Loyal player in less than a month to be named to the league’s Team of the Week. Alejandro Guido was also named to the Team of the Week on July 5 for his performance against Orange County SC on June 29. This week marks Moshobane’s second Team of the Week recognition in 2022, after his first inclusion on April 5 for his standout Week 4 performance, a 3-2 win against El Paso Locomotive FC.

SD Loyal (12W-5L-4D, 40 points) now heads into its next match, a Western Conference affair against Orange County SC on Saturday, July 30 (7 p.m.) at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, Calif.
