AC Milan need ‘real money’ to sign £13.5m Tottenham star as Conte calls for ‘best decision’

Put your Monopoly set away AC Milan, you need ‘real money’ to sign this Tottenham midfielder.

Pape Matar Sarr joined Spurs from FC Metz last summer, but was loaned back to the French side last season, contributing three assists and one goal in 33 Ligue 1 appearances.

Milan are interested in Sarr, according to Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness), who claim the 19-year-old is on the club’s shortlist to bolster their midfield having lost Franck Kessie on a free transfer to Barcelona.

Their number one target is Charles de Ketelaere, who prefers a move to the Serie A side over Leeds from Club Brugge.

But a report claims Milan are ‘trembling’ as they have failed to meet Brugge’s €35m demand with talks stalling and their chances of striking a deal for De Ketelaere ‘decreasing’.

That could lead them to instead move for Sarr, but as is the case for all football clubs (apart from Barcelona, apparently), it is ‘essential to have real money in hand’ to sign the teenager.

Given Tottenham paid £13.5m for Sarr they cannot ‘objectively consider’ a loan with a right to buy, or indeed any loan move, according to the report.

But that’s at odds with the thoughts of Spurs boss Antonio Conte, who said he was open to loan exit for Sarr while on preseason tour, as long as it’s the “best decision” for the player.

Conte said: “About Sarr, he’s a young player. A good prospect. He will be the future for Tottenham. Together, with Sarr we also have other young players and we will try with the club to take the best decision for them.

“It can be very important to take the best decision about whether to stay in the squad, to stay at Tottenham or go out on loan and play with regularity every game and continue to improve.”

And first team opportunities may well be thin on the ground for Sarr at Tottenham, who have added Yves Bissouma from Brighton for £26m this summer.

The Mali international will join Rodrigo Bentancur, who signed for £15m from Juventus in January, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp as options in the two central midfield spots in Conte’s preferred formation.

Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele also remain on the Spurs books, but reports they’re among a number of players Fabio Paratici is looking to find buyers for in the current window.
