The England international had spent 22 years at United and left the club as a free agent at the end of last season.

There was an offer on the table from West Ham, where he spent the second half of the 2020-21 season on loan, scoring nine goals and contributing five assists.

But Lingard opted for Forest and has since been castigated by pundits and fans for his decision and resulting activity on social media.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Lingard to tune out the noise and not listen to “the dinosaurs”.

He told talkSPORT: “I feel like a lot of the dinosaurs, the older generation, need to zip it and get on with it.

“If he wants to do J-Lingz, if he wants to dance, if he wants to go on TikTok, good for him.

“Don’t listen to these dinosaurs, the Simon Jordans, the Richard Keys… all these jokers. Do what you want to do Jesse.”

Agbonlahor alsosaid people should not be so quick to jump to conclusions over Lingard’s motivation for joining Forest.

He added:“What if he’s gone to Nottingham Forest because last season Nottingham Forest beat two Premier League clubs in the FA Cup, just about lost to Liverpool.

“They were on fire last season playing some amazing stuff to get promoted as well.

“He’s going for the project as well as I feel that Forest will be a top team next season and they will shock a lot of teams.

“You’ve seen Sheffield United do it, you’ve seen Leeds do it. I think Nottingham Forest next season, with the players, they’ve got, are all going to be hungry to succeed in the Premier League.

“The City Ground will be a fortress as well.”
