Atlético Ottawa (finally!) faced Valour FC at TD Place Wednesday night, and with neither side having played in over 10 days, these two play-off contenders were eager to take their respective strides towards the summit of the Canadian Premier League. And that they did, offering a hard-fought, well-balanced match that could’ve gone either way. In the end, Atlético Ottawa split the points in a 1-1 draw with Valour FC, both goals delt on converted kicks from the penalty spot.

KEY MOMENTS

After a “long and difficult 10-days” (see Head Coach Carlos González post-match comments), Coach González opted for a number of tactical changes in his starting lineup.

Niba MacDonald returned to his central defender position with Drew Beckie starting the match on the bench.

Team pillar Miguel Acosta was bestowed the all-important role of captain for the match, a leadership position that suits his abilities both technical and interpersonal as he demonstrated.

Young Canadian Zachary Roy earned his first professional start, registering 45 minutes during which he offered a solid performance, helping create the threat that would lead to Ottawa being awarded the kick from the penalty spot, later converted to tie the match (15′).

Forward Vladimir Moragrega collected his first goal (15′) with Atlético Ottawa when he put the penalty kick past the extended arms of Valour’s Jonathan Sirois.

Atlético Ottawa is now undefeated in their last four matches, sitting in second position in the CPL table.

Despite the match being rescheduled last-minute from a weekend afternoon to a mid-week evening, Ottawa fans showed up as they’ve made a tradition now, with 2,571 dedicated Atleti family members braving the heat to cheer their team on.

Ottawa travel to face York United this Sunday (2PM ET live on OneSoccer) before returning to TD Place to host Forge FC on Sunday, July 31 (7PM ET).
