Atlanta United 2 Falls 5-0 to San Antonio FC

SAN ANTONIO – Atlanta United 2 fell to San Antonio FC 5-0 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. Vicente Reyes made a career-high nine saves in the match.

Sam Adeniran opened the night’s scoring, taking the 1-0 lead for San Antonio in the 13th minute. A floated ball from Mohammed Abu was cleared by the Atlanta defense but only as far as Connor Maloney, whose square pass found the feet of Adeniran. The forward dribbled into the box and opened his hips to find the back of the net with his left foot.


San Antonio found a second goal three minutes later. Santiago Patiño received a pass from PC, turned quickly and fired in a curling effort from 20 yards out past Reyes.

The hosts were awarded a penalty after Nigel Prince bumped Patiño from the back in the box. The Colombian powered his penalty shot into the roof of the net to make it a 3-0 scoreline.

Adeniran bagged his second goal in the 52nd minute, flicking a looping header over a diving Reyes after getting on the end of Mohammed Abu cross from the left side.

Luke Brennan was close to scoring a goal with his first touch of the match as a substitute in the 57th minute. David Mejía drove to the byline on the left wing and crossed in a ball for the 17-year-old, which the young forward volleyed toward goal. The shot forced a smart save out of goalkeeper Jordan Farr.

Another penalty was awarded for San Antonio in the 69th minute after Reyes brought down PC in the box. Justin Dhillon soared his shot over the bar.

Dhillon made amends for his missed penalty by scoring the match’s fifth and final goal, burying a left-footed shot from a tight angle in the 88th minute.

ATL UTD 2 (4-15-3, 15 points) travels to Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, July 23 (7:30 p.m., ESPN+).
