Ten Hag makes Man Utd stance clear on Ronaldo transfer; reveals captain for next season

Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo looks unhappy

Erik ten Hag says Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo is “not for sale” after reports claimed the striker wants to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Widespread reports have indicated that Ronaldo has asked the Man Utd hierarchy to allow him to go if a ‘satisfactory’ offer is submitted for his services.

The Portugal international re-joined the Red Devils last summer along with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane as expectations rose.

Despite scoring 24 goals in 38 matches, Ronaldo couldn’t prevent Man Utd from finishing sixth in the Premier League, while failing to qualify for the Champions League.

The latest reports claim that Ronaldo has been left unconvinced by United’s business in the transfer window as he looks to compete in the Champions League again next term.

But Ten Hag insists that as far as he is concerned Ronaldo is “not for sale” and the Portugal international has not told him that he wants to leave Old Trafford.

Ten Hag told journalists in a press conference on Monday: “So he’s not with us. That’s due to personal issues.

“We are planning with Ronaldo for this season – that’s it. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

When asked whether Ronaldo has asked to leave, Ten Hag said: “He hasn’t told me this. I have read, but as I say, Cristiano is not for sale, he’s in our plans and we want to get success together.”

On whether he has spoken to Ronaldo at all, Ten Hag added: “I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation him and had a real good talk.”

Harry Maguire was heavily criticised for some of his performances last season as Man Utd struggled with some reports claiming Ronaldo’s influence in the dressing room had undermined the captain at times last term.

That led to rumours that Ten Hag would look to appoint a new skipper for next season but the Dutchman confirmed in his press conference that Maguire will remain as leader.

Ten Hag continued: “Harry Maguire is the captain. He’s an established captain, he’s achieved a lot of success, so I don’t doubt this issue.”
