SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC opened a three-match homestand with a 5-0 loss against visiting LA Galaxy II Saturday night at Torero Stadium.

SD Loyal played 79 minutes with 10 men while Cameron Dunbar and Preston Judd both scored a pair of goals in the USL Championship Week 18 match between Western Conference rivals. Dunbar scored his goals in the 13th and 31st minutes while Judd added his in the 22nd and 59th. It was LA Galaxy’s first win against SD Loyal in nearly two years. Los Dos beat SD Loyal 1-0 in the first ever meeting on July 19, 2020. SD Loyal forfeited a September 23 match against LA Galaxy II that same season.

SD Loyal, who continued to play its attacking style of play despite being a man down, was unbeaten against LA Galaxy II in the last six meetings between the Southern California rivals.

Saturday night it was Los Dos taking an early 1-0 lead when Dunbar converted a penalty kick with a low-rolling shot to the right of SD Loyal goalkeeper Koke Vegas. LA was given a penalty kick after defender Kyle Adams was whistled for an erroneous handball inside his own six-yard box. Adams was presented with a straight red card, putting SD Loyal a man down for the majority of the match.

LA Galaxy II extended the lead to 2-0 when Preston sent a shot into the roof of the SD Loyal net after a ball deflected off his teammate Dunbar outside the six-yard box. Los Dos added its third when Dunbar chipped in a long cross by Judd on a breakaway for his second goal of the night.

Los Dos took advantage of SD Loyal playing with 10-men and got an early second half goal as coach Landon Donovan’s team came out pressuring, trying to break the shutout.

Judd added his second of the night when he sent in a pass by Michael Salazar from left to right with only Vegas to beat for a 4-0 lead. The scoring on the night ended with an SD Loyal own goal as defender Nikko Boxall slid to try and stop a rolling cross by Owen Lambe in the 81st minute.

Donovan’s team will try to bounce back from the defeat when it hosts Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Monday July 18 in a rescheduled match from May. Tickets are available now on sdloyal.com.
