July 9, 2022 – Canadian Premier League (CPL)Atletico Ottawa News Release

Atlético Ottawa were finally back on home turf after a three-match road trip, hosting co-league leaders Cavalry FC in a clash for first place under the lights of TD Place Saturday evening. The cagey 1-1 draw felt like a win in many ways for Head Coach Carlos Gonzales who felt his squad showed they can take the match to any opponent in the league.

KEY MOMENTS

Saturday’s match marked the 50th match in Atlético Ottawa colours for Malcolm Shaw (1 Canadian Championship, 49 CPL over 3 seasons). He’s the first one to reach this mark for the franchise.

Ottawa created numerous opportunities with a total of 16 shots (3 on target), many of which were blocked by a steady Cavalry FC defensive line.

Ballou Tabla converted the 1 big chance that presented itself for the Atleti with a wonderful one-two play with Malcolm Shaw in the 47′ minute.

The match was described by both head coaches as a tactical chess match, where each side offered thoughtful planning and execution in an equally contended clash.

Atlético Ottawa and Cavalry FC will continue to share the top spot in the standings for a few more days, both sitting at 25 points (Calgary with a game in hand) thanks to 7 wins and 4 draws on the season.

Continuing to build fan interest with each match, Atlético Ottawa welcomed 4,566 fans for Saturday’s Beach Party Match.

Ottawa returns to the pitch at TD Place next Sunday, July 17 as they host Valour FC (KO 3PM ET).
