Tottenham have confirmed the sale of Steven Bergwijn to Ajax in a deal worth £28m. 

Bergwijn joined from Ajax’s Eredivisie rivals PSV Eindhoven in 2020 but failed to perform consistently during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. 

Thanking the forward for his service, Spurs made reference to a number of Bergwijn’s notable moments in a Tottenham shirt.

‘We have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Steven Bergwijn,’ their statement read.

‘Signed from PSV Eindhoven in January, 2020, the Netherlands international marked his debut with the opening goal in a 2-0 win against Manchester City and scored our first goal on football’s return from lockdown against Manchester United in June, 2020,’ it added.

‘Stevie went on to make 81 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring eight goals, including a memorable double in injury time to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory against Leicester City in January last season.

Meanwhile, Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder said the move was indicative of the player’s ‘ambition’. 

‘It is indicative of Steven’s ambition that he chose to make the step to Ajax. He is a player with many qualities. He has enormous drive and is also very goal-oriented. Of course, I am happy that we were able to sign him, he adds new quality to our team,’ he said.
