Southampton ‘leading race’ to sign Man City starlet after Prem rival had £17m bid rejected

Southampton target Kabore

According to reports, Southampton are ‘leading the race’ to sign Manchester City youngster Issa Kabore on loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

The right-back moved to Man City ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. He was loaned straight back to Belgian side KV Mechelen that term and he spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Troyes.

The 21-year-old shone in France in 2021/22 as he played 32 times across all competitions.

Kabore also made a name for himself earlier this year at the African Cup of Nations. He was named the tournament’s Best Young Player as his Burkina Faso side were beaten by Senegal in the final.

The starlet is ‘attracting a lot of interest’ this summer, according to respected journalist Fabrizio Romano.

He notes that Southampton are now the side ‘leading the race’ to sign him. The Saints have ‘opened talks’ with Man City over a loan deal.

Romano adds that newly-promoted Nottingham Forest have had a £17m offer rejected for the defender.

Meanwhile, Southampton are ‘in negotations’ to sign Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo, according to David Ornstein.

It was reported last year that Aribo had no intention of renewing his Gers contract with a year now remaining, and it appears that his stance has not changed.

The 25-year-old joined from Charlton Athletic in 2019 and has gone on to make 148 appearances for the Scottish club.

He was consistently available for club and country last term. Aribo played an unprecedented 69 times in 2021/22 and scored in Rangers’ penalty shootout loss against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final.

Aston Villa have been linked with the Nigeria playmaker, however, Southampton have opened talks over a move for the player, as per The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

Aribo is thought to be ‘keen’ on a move to St Mary’s and the clubs are currently negotiating a transfer fee.

The former Charlton man has a £10million release clause in his contract and Rangers are not willing to accept an offer below that value.

Southampton are ‘confident’ they can sign Aribo despite ‘one other club’ being in talks with the Teddy Bears.

Aribo wants the situation to be dealt with ‘amicably’ as he has ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ his time in Scotland, though he has made it clear that he sees himself playing in the Premier League.
