Ronaldo goes on ‘indefinite leave’ as Man Utd curse ‘awful’ timing amid transfer rumours

Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo waves to the fans

Man Utd have no idea when Cristiano Ronaldo will return to training amid speculation over his future at the club, according to reports.

Widespread reports on Saturday claimed that the Portugal international has his heart set on summer move away from Old Trafford this summer.

The Times insisted that Ronaldo has asked the Red Devils to let him leave should they receive a ‘satisfactory offer’ in the current transfer window.

Chelsea, Napoli and Barcelona are amongst the clubs being linked with Ronaldo but Man Utd are understood to be strong in their stance that he is going nowhere.

Man Utd accepted Ronaldo’s reasons to delay his return to training yesterday with the 37-year-old reportedly citing ‘family reasons’.

However, The Daily Telegraph claim that Man Utd ‘are in the dark over’ his return date after pictures emerged of him at the Portuguese national team’s training centre in Lisbon.

The report adds:

‘And while the Premier League club insist they are sensitive to the genuine personal issues that have required Ronaldo to stay in Lisbon, there is no set date in place for his delayed return.

‘Sources claimed it was “unclear” when he will return at present, casting doubt over whether he will join his team for their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, which leaves on Friday.

‘It effectively amounts to a case of “indefinite leave” for the United star, in the wake of the news that he wants to quit the club after less than 12 months.’

In a separate report in The Athletic, it is claimed that Ronaldo ‘was not expected to attend training on Tuesday either’ and that ‘it is not known when he will return’.

The Athletic continues:

‘The serious reasons for Ronaldo’s no-show are being debated in the industry and specifically the timing, described by some close to the club as “awful”. He knew United would not be in the Champions League in April but waited until July to communicate his intentions.’
