July 4, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)San Diego Loyal News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – SD Loyal earned a 3-2 come-from-behind win at host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Monday night despite playing a man down. SD Loyal handed Colorado Springs its fifth loss of the season using a pair of Charlie Adams assists and goals by Kyle Adams, Tumi Moshobane and the eventual game-winner from Evan Conway.

The nationally televised broadcast (ESPN2) saw a shorthanded SD Loyal produce goals from Adams (51st minute), Moshobane (63rd minute) and Conway (81st minute) in come-from-behind fashion at Wiedner Field in its first meeting against Colorado Springs. With the win, SD Loyal adds three more points to the club’s best start in franchise history.

SD Loyal (10W-4L-4D, 10 points) trailed 1-0 at halftime after Colorado Springs (12W-5L-0D, 36 points) got a score from 2021 USL Championship Most Valuable Player Hadji Berry. The home side’s top scorer of 2022 took a through ball from Cam Lindley that split a pair of SD Loyal defenders and fired past Koke Vegas from the top of the box.

Coach Landon Donovan’s team answered in the second half with Kyle Adams’ goal via header. The defender sent in a Charlie Adams corner kick past Switchbacks FC goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell to tie the match 1-1.

Moshobane gave SD Loyal a 2-1 lead after he sent in a low left-footed shot past Caldwell, beating the goalkeeper to his left. Moshobane completed the scoring play for his fourth goal of the season after taking a Charlie Adams quick pass.

Colorado Springs, the second-place team in the Western Conference, didn’t take long to tie it at 2-2 with another Berry goal. This time the forward converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute for his 10th goal of the season. SD Loyal defender Grant Stoneman was whistled for the penalty kick for a handball and was sent off for his second yellow card of the match.

SD Loyal continued to implement its style of fluid soccer despite playing with 10-men. The persistence was rewarded when Conway sent in the game-winner 13-minutes later when he put back a Collin Martin blocked shot. Coach Landon Donovan’s team withstood a late surge by Colorado Springs and held on for another road win.

SD Loyal now returns home to host LA Galaxy II on Saturday, July 9 (7 p.m.) in another Western Conference rivalry match. Tickets are available now at sdloyal.com.
