Welsh superstar Gareth Bale has announced he will join MLS champions LAFC rather than a return to England following the conclusion of his time with Real Madrid.
The 32-year-old winger had been linked with a host of clubs with his contract at Real winding down, having joined Los Blancos in 2013 from Tottenham.
Bale confirmed on social media on Saturday that he will join LAFC, who were MLS champions in 2021.
The California club, who are coached by ex-USA international Steve Cherundolo, boast ex-Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini and Arsenal forward Carlos Vela already.
Bale had been linked with Welsh outfit Cardiff City, who are currently in England’s second tier, along with Getafe and a handful of English clubs.
The veteran is set to lead Wales at the World Cup in Qatar later this year, where the Dragons are grouped against USA, along with England and Iran.
Bale has struggled at club level in recent years, managing only seven appearances in the 2021-22 season for Real, but has still delivered internationally.
The winger had a solid but unspectacular loan spell with Tottenham in 2020-21, scoring 16 goals from 34 appearances in all competitions.
LAFC general manager John Thorrington said the club would set Bale up “in a position to succeed” in the MLS.
“We’ve done our diligence as you would hopefully expect,” Thorrington told ESPN.
“We had very open conversations and again, we did our diligence and we know what we are getting into.
“We have had very detailed conversations with Gareth about what he needs to be successful.
“We believe we are absolutely comfortable with putting Gareth in a position to succeed and it will greatly benefit LAFC.”
