Haaland and Salah head Premier League Golden Boot market despite Son’s late-season heroics

Heung-min Son’s late surge up the goalscoring charts brought some much-needed drama to last season’s Golden Boot chase, which Mo Salah seemed to have long since wrapped up.

Despite having just nine goals to his name going into the final week of February, Son hit a rich vein of form, finishing the campaign with 14 goals in 14 games to tie with the Liverpool man on 23 goals.

However, the bookies are not convinced Son will continue his hot streak into 2022/23, with the Tottenham forward 9/1 with Planet Sport Bet to be the Premier League’s leading scorer next season.

It puts the South Korean fourth in the betting behind Spurs team-mate Harry Kane (6/1), Salah (9/2) and a player who represents something of an unknown quantity when it comes to goal output for 2022/23.

Erling Haaland has been installed as 9/2 joint favourite to top the scoring charts after making the switch from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City.

The bookies’ confidence in him is based on his destination, the champions, and his prolific record in the Bundesliga. The 21-year-old notched 22 goals in 24 appearances in Germany’s top flight last season off the back of 27 in 28 the previous campaign.

Throw in 23 goals in 19 Champions League matches and their faith appears justified. However, Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho are just two recent acquisitions from Bundesliga whose goalscoring feats have failed to translate to the Premier League.

Darwin Nunez is another prolific forward who will be making his Premier League debut this season and Liverpool’s Portuguese forward is rated a 16/1 shot to top the goalscoring charts next May.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who still plundered 18 goals as part of misfiring Manchester United side, is 10/1 while there are a couple of interesting outsiders whose odds may shorten considerably with moves in the window.
