Liverpool are reportedly on the cusp of signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, who will soon fly Merseyside to finalise the €100m deal.

A full verbal agreement has been reached between the two clubs and the contracts are in the process of being signed. Benfica will receive a guaranteed €80m for their frontman, with the potential for a further €20m in add-ons.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, “a five or six year deal” has been proposed to Nunez, who will fly to Liverpool to complete his transfer once the contracts have been signed.

The Uruguayan international scored 26 goals in 28 league games and struck six times in the Champions League. Speaking to talkSPORT, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said of Nunez earlier this month: “I watched him three times in the space of six weeks. One thing I really liked about him was that he is dynamic.

“He’s a very Klopp-type player with high energy, both with and without the ball. He doesn’t mind a press and saw him running back a few times.

“When he hasn’t got the ball, he doesn’t mind running in behind. He’s more of a number nine, he’s not going to play out wide.”

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp said of Nunez after he scored in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final clash between Liverpool and Benfica: “Extremely good looking boy, huh? And a decent player as well. Really good. I knew before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with Ibrahima Konate.

“He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

In other Liverpool news, Manchester City have reportedly joined the race to sign the Barcelona sensation, Gavi.

The 17-year-old made 46 appearances in all competitions for the Blaugrana last season but has reached an impasse in negotiations over a new deal.

Barcelona are reluctant to meet his wage demands, paving the way for an exit from the club. Gavi has a €50m release clause and while Liverpool were thought to be favourites, the Mirror now report that Manchester City will rival the Reds for his signature.
