Liverpool have seen off competition from Manchester United and Arsenal to sign Benfica forward Darwin Nunez for approximately 100 million pounds according to reports.
The reported move becomes one of the first major off-season transfers following the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign, with the 2022-23 Premier League to commence early on August 6.
Uruguay international Nunez has allegedly left his national team camp to complete the move with the Reds, signing on a five-year contract.
Nunez will undergo a medical in England, with the deal agreed between both parties.
The 22-year-old netted 34 goals in 41 appearances last term for Benfica, including 26 in the Primeira Liga to be the competition’s top scorer.
Benfica finished down in third in Portugal, with FC Porto lifting the title ahead of Sporting Lisbon.
But Nunez also scored six goals in Benfica’s run to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League where Liverpool knocked them out.
Nunez scored in both goals as Benfica went down 3-1 at home and drew 3-3 at Anfield, impressing his suitors.
The Uruguayan’s arrival may have an impact on Sadio Mane, who has been linked with a move away from Liverpool.
The Reds added Luis Diaz from Porto in January to good effect, bolstering their forward options alongside Mohamed Salah, Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.
