SD Loyal Signs Goalkeeper Jon Kempin on Loan from DC United

June 10, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)San Diego Loyal News Release

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC announced today the acquisition of goalkeeper Jon Kempin via loan from Major League Soccer side DC United. The 29-year-old joins the club for a second stint after playing for Landon Donovan’s side in 2020.

During the 2020 SD Loyal season, Kempin played in 11 matches (all starts) and recorded five shutouts. The goalkeeper is tied for the highest goals-against average in USL Championship history with his 0.5 average.

Kempin rejoins a SD Loyal squad that is in the midst of its best start in franchise history. Kempin is coming from DC United where he has played in two matches this MLS season. Kempin played with SD Loyal in its inaugural season before being called back to his former team, Columbus Crew and was later traded to DC United in January 2021.

Kempin started his professional career at 17-years-old when he signed with Sporting Kansas City (formerly the Kansas City Wizards) as their first Homegrown in club history on Aug. 30, 2010. Kempin made his debut for Sporting KC in a 3-2 win against Orlando City SC (who were in the USL at the time) in the third round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 30, 2012. Kempin also made eight appearances for Sporting KC in the MLS Reserve League, recording two clean sheets. Kempin spent the first seven years of his career in Kansas City, which included a number of loan spells to United Soccer League sides early on. He made four appearances (three starts) in 2014 and recorded three starts in 2015, allowing 12 total goals in total.

Kempin was traded to LA Galaxy just prior to the 2017 season. After playing with the Galaxy’s reserve team, Kempin eventually stepped into the starting role in Los Angeles, making seven starts that year, including two shutouts.

Following the 2017 season, Kempin was again traded, this time to the Crew, where he was the backup to starter Zack Steffen in Columbus and made five appearances, all starts, in his first season.
