England ‘showed their mentality’ and ‘played their best football in last half hour’ vs Germany

Harry Kane claimed that England “showed their mentality” as they battled back to draw on the road against Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

England were beaten 1-0 by Hungary in their UEFA Nations League opener. They travelled to face Germany in their second group game on Tuesday night.

Gareth Southgate made five changes as Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka, Kalvin Phillips, Kieran Trippier and John Stones were all drafted in.

Germany were the better side were large portions of the game. Jonas Hoffman had a goal disallowed in the 25th minute but his effort shortly after the interval stood. His fierce shot got the better of Jordan Pickford.

England finished the game well as they were helped by Jack Grealish’s presence on the pitch.

The visitors were awarded a penalty with a couple of minutes left of normal time. This came as Nico Schlotterbeck was adjudged to have brought down Kane.

The Tottenham forward stepped up to take the spot-kick himself. He calmly sent Manuel Neuer the wrong way to make it 1-1.

This result gets England off the mark in their Nations League group. They sit on one point, while table-toppers Italy have four points.

The Three Lions host Italy at Molineux on Saturday night. They then face Hungary again next week.

Speaking after the draw, Kane stated that England “kept going” and it was a “shame” that they did not pick up all three points:

“Really nice feeling [to score]. I had a couple of chances earlier, the first one was over the bar and Manuel Neuer made a good save for the second,” Kane said (via BBC Sport).

“We kept going and played our best football in the last half an hour. Good to get the goal and a shame not to nick it at the end.”

On scoring his 50th England goal: “I love scoring goals, I have always loved it, especially for my country. Whenever I can help the team I am glad to do that.

“It is really important to show the mentality, 1-0 behind we showed good character to get back into the game and get a result. We are playing against a very good Germany side. We still have important matches but the World Cup will be here before we know it.”
