Aston Villa suffer transfer blow as move for Leeds star now ‘unlikely’, may turn to Brighton man

Aston Villa have suffered a major transfer blow with a move for Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips now rated unlikely but they could turn their attentions to a Brighton star.

Steven Gerrard has already added French midfielder Boubacar Kamara to his squad with the player joining the club on a free transfer from Marseille.

However, Gerrard reportedly wants to add more depth to his midfield which already has the likes of John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz.

Leeds’ star Phillips has been one of the most frequent targets linked with a move to Villa Park and had the Whites been relegated, a deal may have been available for a reduced fee.

However, The Athletic are now reporting that a deal for Phillips to join Villa is now ‘unlikely’ and they may have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Brighton’s Bissouma is the name mentioned in the report as a possible option for Gerrard, as they look to test the Seagulls’ resolve again following a rejected bid in January.

However, Villa will not pay over their valuation for the midfielder, who has just over a year remaining on his current deal.

In another blow for Gerrard and Villa, they look to have missed out on Bologna’s Scottish left-back Aaron Hickey with the midlands cub unwilling to meet his £20m valuation.

The 20-year-old, who has also been linked to Arsenal, had been targeted as a possible back-up to Lucas Digne but Villa will now return to a number of other targets.

Rangers’ Calvin Bassey, who played under Gerrard at the Scottish side, has been mentioned as has Anderlecht’s Sergio Gomez.
