Comparing Messi’s PSG record with Ronaldo’s at Man Utd in 2021-22

Comparing Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's stats after turning 30

We’re nearing the end of both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s careers but the two players who have bestrode a generation aren’t winding down just yet. Here’s how their 2021-22 season stats compare.

Both Messi and Ronaldo switched clubs last summer; while Messi made a tearful exit from Barcelona and joined PSG, Ronaldo made a sensational return to Manchester United after spending three years in Serie A with Juventus.

It could be claimed that it hasn’t gone to plan for either of them. While Messi hasn’t lived up to expectations in France, Ronaldo has been part of United’s disastrous season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Despite the pair moving clubs in the summer, neither made it to the Champions League quarter-finals for the second season in a row, with Ronaldo’s United losing to his old enemy Atletico Madrid, and Messi’s PSG collapsing at the Santiago Bernabeu in the last 16.

Messi did at least end his debut season at PSG with a Ligue 1 title but Ronaldo had a trophyless season for the first time since 2010.

Both have received criticism, with Messi receiving boos from PSG fans, whilst many have questioned whether United are a better team without Ronaldo in the starting XI.

Yet both players have produced occasional moments of class to remind football followers of their prowess and neither has been a total failure at their new club – but who’s been superior?

We’ve crunched the numbers to see which of Messi and Ronaldo enjoyed the better 2021-22 season, both domestically and in the Champions League.
