Newcastle made a bid of around £26million for the 19-year-old in January but he opted against the move saying: ‘The timing wasn’t right.’ 

Dortmund now want him as a replacement for Manchester City-bound Erling Haaland but Ekitike is keen on the Premier League.

Newcastle have also discussed a move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they formulate a plan to take them to the next stage after securing their Premier League status under Eddie Howe. 

Calvert-Lewin, alongside Toffees team-mates Richarlison and Jordan Pickford, had been linked with a move away from Goodison Park during Everton’s relegation plight.
