Serie A: Pioli Hails AC Milan After Drought-Breaking Title

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli says his side deserved the Scudetto after ending their 11-year wait for the title with Sunday’s 3-0 win at Sassuolo.

Milan, who hadn’t won the Serie A since 2011, were crowned Italian champions with a dominant first-half display on Sunday easing any doubts.

French veteran Olivier Giroud put the Rossoneri on the right track with strikes in the 17th and 32nd minutes, before Franck Kessie added a third before half-time.

Milan finished the season two points ahead of city rivals Inter Milan who won 3-0 over Sampdoria on Sunday.

Pioli’s side enjoyed an excellent run of form late in the season including six straight league wins and going unbeaten since January.

“We were more consistent than Inter,” Pioli said. “The last game we lost was against Spezia and we shouldn’t have lost it.

“The team never gave up, the players were fantastic, both those who played more and less. We deserved the Scudetto because we believed in it more.

“We deserved it because we are a strong team and I had two great managers like Maldini and Massara by my side.”

Pioli paid tribute to the club’s fans who have waited more than a decade for their 19th league crown.

“My players are phenomenal,” he said. “They are happy for them, for me, for the staff, for the club and for the fans who deserve this Scudetto. I’m really happy.”
