EPL: Leeds Back In Marsch After Narrowly Escaping Relegation

Leeds United have backed in manager Jesse Marsch to lead the club next season after they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day with a 2-1 win at Brentford.

The 48-year-old American took over at Elland Road in February from Marcelo Bielsa after an awful run of heavy defeats as the Whites slumped into the relegation battle.

Late season resurgence from Burnley and Everton meant Leeds went into the final day needing to better the Clarets’ result to stay up.

Burnley went down 2-1 at home to Newcastle, with Leeds holding up their end of the bargain with victory at Brentford, capped by Jack Harrison’s stoppage-time winner to finish three points clear.

“I knew it was going to require all of my being when I came here and that proved to be true,” Marsch said. “What it showed more than anything else is that we have a group that pours everything they have into what we want to be. Football wise we are not perfect yet and never will be.

“I know we have to develop in that way. But character and mentality and desire and commitment and personality and belief. I have never seen a group like this.

“I was so focused on just keeping this club in the league so we can become more and more what I want us to be and we want us to be. Now we have a chance.”

Leeds finished ninth in their first season back up in the top flight in 2020-21, so their narrow escape from the drop will have underwhelmed, but staying up was key. Now United can plan forward having sealed their status.

Marsch added: “We have to build the club in the right way. When Marcelo left he took ten people with him. We have been working with a smaller group of people doing multiple jobs. We need to bring in the right kind of players and continue to rely on the mentality of the club and players.”

Meanwhile, Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani was quick to clarify Marsch’s future at the club.
