Report reveals the ‘two bones of contention’ as Chelsea lost battle to keep Christensen

There were ‘two bones of contention’ that saw Chelsea lose Andreas Christensen to La Liga side Barcelona, according to reports.

The Denmark international is about to enter the final month of his contract at Stamford Bridge with the Blues failing to agree fresh terms and keep him at the club.

Widespread reports expect him to join Barcelona on a free transfer this summer once his contract expires at the end of June.

Christensen faced a backlash over the weekend as reports emerged that he withdrew himself from selection a few hours before the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The Dane – who had a two-year loan spell at Borussia Moenchengladbach between 2015 and 2017 – has spent a decade at Chelsea, after joining as a youth player from Brondby, and has gone on to make 161 appearances for the Blues senior side over six seasons.

But his time at Chelsea could’ve been extended if the Blues had agreed to the centre-back’s wishes with The Athletic insisting there were ‘two bones of contention’ during negotiations.

The Athletic claim:

‘First, Christensen wasn’t offered a signing on fee or bonus, which is fairly commonplace, as part of new arrangements with playing staff in the game.

‘As far as his camp was concerned, it would mean he earned less overall (wages and signing bonus combined) than his previous deal signed in January 2018.

‘Chelsea did not think this was the case. Although he wasn’t given a bonus as part of the package this time, meeting a request for the higher salary was seen as still being worth more and a fair compromise.

‘The second complication was how the agent’s fee — Christensen was represented by his father at this point — was to be paid. His dad wanted the sum within two years, Chelsea proposed to provide it over four. This wasn’t settled either.’
