Liverpool win the Quadruple; ‘Least Defeats in a Season’ and ‘Net Spend’ trophies already in bag

Liverpool have already won four trophies this season so Jurgen Klopp is now second only to Sir Alex Ferguson. Or something.

When Mediawatch saw this headline in the Daily Telegraph

…we did wonder what the f*** Jason Burt was smoking and whether he should be nudged gently in the direction of Brian Clough, Bill Shankly, Sir Matt Busby or Bob Paisley. But then it turns out that he has been stitched up royally by a sub-editor who read that ‘claiming the FA Cup means that he has become the first Liverpool manager to complete the set of major trophies and only the second to do so, in English football history, after Sir Alex Ferguson with Manchester United’ and decided that makes Klopp ‘second only to Sir Alex Ferguson’. We cannot insist this strongly enough: That is not the same thing.

Still, Burt has wildly overestimated the importance of doing a clean sweep of trophies.

‘In under seven years – Ferguson took 13 to do his clean sweep – he has achieved what evaded Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, Pep Guardiola (so far) at Manchester City, Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest and any of Klopp’s predecessors at Liverpool.’

Yes, we imagine Clough went to his grave wishing he could swap one of his European Cups for an FA Cup, while Bob Paisley would have traded all but one of his six league titles and three European Cups for victory in the 1977 FA Cup final. As for Jose Mourinho…imagine having to go to Inter Milan to complete his own clean sweep as he claimed nine trophies in a sluggish six years.

They can all bow down to Klopp. And apparently his success – four trophies in seven years – ‘feels dynastic’ in a way that Pep Guardiola’s success – eight trophies in six years – simply cannot.

This really does mean more.
