Newcastle United ‘tracking situation’ of Leicester City star ahead of Rodgers’ ‘squad reshuffle’

According to reports, Newcastle United are ‘tracking the situation’ of Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel ahead of the summer transfer window.

The former Manchester City and Leeds United goalkeeper has been with the Foxes since 2011.

Schmeichel has been Leicester City’s first-choice goalkeeper since this transfer. He has played 477 times for them across all competitions.

The 35-year-old has helped Leicester win the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield.

His current contract at Leicester is due to expire in 2023. TalkSPORT are reporting that Schmeichel is a ‘potential big-name departure’ this summer.

Brendan Rodgers is ‘planning a reshuffle’ this summer with Leicester set to miss out on European football.

It is added that Newcastle are ‘keen to sign a new number one’ and they are ‘tracking Schmeichel’s situation’. The Leicester standout would also be ‘open’ to a move abroad.

Elsewhere, Eddie Howe has admitted Newcastle will not be able to spend wildly this summer:

“With Financial Fair Play, we have restraints and we have things that we have to work within, so we can’t just go out and spend money on players like maybe teams could have done in the past and totally change their squad within one transfer window.

“That is not an option for us. The more money you spend in one window, the more it impacts your ability to then spend in windows beyond.”

Sources on Tyneside have indicated the Magpies are likely to have a war chest of somewhere between £60m and £80million this summer as they attempt to negotiate Premier League profit and sustainability rules, which limits clubs to record total losses of £105million over a three-year period.

Howe added: “The rules are there to govern the game properly and we have to follow suit, so that does impact what we can do this summer.
