Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insists he doesnt care if the general public wants Liverpool to win the Premier League title rather than his side.
City took a major stride towards their eighth top-flight league title with a 5-0 mauling of midtable Newcastle United.
The win, coupled with Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham, means City are now three points clear along with regaining the goal difference advantage.
“Liverpool are alongside (Manchester) United as the most important team in terms of titles, legacy, history, dramas for many, many things,” Guardiola told reporters.
“But we have since the last 11 or 12 years been there. I know sometimes we are uncomfortable, but I don’t care if the people want Liverpool to win more than us. It is not an issue.”
The Spaniard added: “Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone.
“Of course because Liverpool has an incredible history in European competition. Not in the Premier League, because they have won one in 30 years, but it is not a problem at all.”
If City do triumph, it will be their fourth Premier League title in the past five seasons.
Meanwhile, Arsenal moved closer to clinching a top-four berth with a 2-1 home win over Leeds United, who slipped into the drop zone.
Arsenal’s win means they are four points clear of Tottenham, who drew with Liverpool on Saturday. The two clubs meet in a midweek North London derby.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: “We want to prepare and go for that match like we always do, with the same enthusiasm, but knowing obviously that this can be a defining moment and thats an extra level of motivation and another layer for us to really go for it and I cant wait to play that game.”
Leeds’ defeat along with Everton’s 2-1 win at Leicester City means the Whites are 18th with three games to play.
Everton are 16th with 35 points from 34 games, with Burnley 17th on 34 points from 35 games and Leeds behind them on goal difference on 34 points from 35 games.
