Her Majesty the Queen loves her horse racing and was dreaming of a 2022 Epsom Derby win in her Platinum Jubilee year with Reach For The Moon. However, all hope of a Classic win was dashed this week as trainer John Gosden has ruled him out of the Epsom race on June 4th.

Reach For The Moon’s Epsom Derby Bid Eclipsed

The Queen’s Reach For The Moon was generally third favourite with most bookmakers for the Epsom Derby in early June but his trainer, John Gosden, has run out of time to get the horse fit for the fourth English Classic of the flat season.

With Her Majesty also celebrating her Platinum Jubilee year and also yet to win the Epsom Derby, there was every chance Reach For The Moon would have been well-supported in the build-up to the race.

However, the son of Sea The Stars (Derby winner in 2009) hasn’t fully recovered from an injury sustained last autumn, with Gosden having an eye on races later in the season and most likely Royal Ascot.

John Gosden told the Racing Post: “Following a setback last autumn, Reach For The Moon has been given all the time and care he requires in his training programme. We had planned to run him in the Dante Stakes at York next week. However, in the best interests of horse we have decided that this race is coming too soon for him. Consequently, he will not run in the Derby and will be pointed towards Royal Ascot.”

Last season the horse caught the eye after winning well at Newbury and Sandown, plus was a close second in the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on his final start in September.
