Ralf Rangnick has namechecked a top Manchester City target as a player Manchester United could pursue during his two-year consultancy role.
The German will aid Erik ten Hag once the Ajax coach comes in to replace him in the Old Trafford dugout. The exact details of the consultancy role are unclear, although Rangnick has plenty of experience to pass on.
He will also take charge of the Austrian national team after penning a two-year contract with their football association, the OFB.
When announcing his decision, Rangnick pledged his allegiance to Manchester United, too. He wants to help make the Red Devils ‘a real force’ once again.
At a press conference, the interim United boss was asked about his team’s ability to bring in world-class talent.
They are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League as things stand and this could impact their attraction for top players.
However, Rangnick remains confident stars will want to play at the Theatre of Dreams. And he even named Erling Haaland as a possible signing.
“My personal opinion is the club should try to find future top star players and try to develop them,” Rangnick said (via Goal). “Tell me five players that might be some you spoke about?

“Haaland is a young player of 21 or 22, this is one of those players I speak about. On the other hand, he has developed into one of the most expensive strikers in the world.
“Yes, he would be one of those examples I think that we should be on to identify and convince to be United players for the next years.”
Of course, the Borussia Dortmund ace is edging closer to a City transfer. There is already an agreement in place between the two parties over personal terms.
City are working on the other financial aspects of the deal, such as agent fees and Haaland’s £63million release clause.
However, Rangnick’s comments suggest United might make a late play for Haaland this summer.
