‘Stop being stupid’; Newcastle ace loved by Howe and fans responds to loyalty slur

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has rubbished claims that he wanted to leave former club Lyon just a few months after joining in 2020.

Guimaraes signed up to the Magpies revolution in January and has already become a firm fans’ favourite at St James’ Park. The Brazil international has bagged four goals and one assist during the club’s amazing ascent up the Premier League table. From a desperate situation in December, the north-east outfit now sit ninth in the top-flight standings.

Ten wins and two draws this year mean relegation is no longer an issue. And, with four straight wins under their belt, Eddie Howe’s side are now only six points adrift of eighth-placed Wolves.

Guimaraes has played a full part since arriving from Lyon. He spent two years with Les Gones, enjoying 71 outings in all competitions.

But his status at and loyalty to the Ligue 1 club have been questioned in recent days. His agent, Alexis Malavolta, gave a interview to Italian outlet Tutto Juve.

In it, he said: “In 2020, in the first window following the pandemic, we asked to see if he could leave [Lyon].

“Bruno had just arrived in Lyon, Juventus were already interested, but the hypothesis of a loan with an option to buy was ruled out.”

Those words were then translated by French outlet Olympique-et-Lyonnais, using the headline “Bruno Guimaraes had asked to leave in the summer of 2020.”

However, it appears that the article is far from the truth and prompted the South American to respond.

Guimaraes hits back

Guimaraes has already stated that he wants to ‘write his name’ in the Newcastle history books. And Howe has been full of praise for his winter addition.

The slur from across the Channel seems to have irked the Rio de Janeiro-born ace. And he has made it clear on Twitter that recent reporting is nonsense.

He tweeted: “When did I ask to leave?” Guimaraes replied in French (translated). “I didn’t even ask!!
