Rio Ferdinand claims Erik Ten Hag must copy Klopp transformation of Liverpool star for Man Utd blueprint

Rio Ferdinand has set out a clear six-point plan for how he thinks Erik ten Hag can return Manchester United to their former heights.

United are nearing the 10-year anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson leaving and the club have failed to progress since. Indeed, Ten Hag will be the sixth manager to try to restore the Red Devils to where they once were.

Ralf Rangnick is currently in interim charge following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November. However, Man Utd’s latest campaign is fizzling out by the week.

Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal was their second in a row and their fourth in seven matches. They now run the risk of finishing outside the Premier League’s top six – let alone making the top four and next season’s Champions League.

United revealed clarity over their future on Thursday by announcing Ajax boss Ten Hag as their new boss.

And speaking to BT Sport, ex-United defender Ferdinand announced his six-part plan for the Dutchman. The pundit’s remit focuses on the culture at Man Utd, recruitment, a clear playing style, developing youth and first-team players and a structural reset.

On the culture at United, Ferdinand said: “I mean having areas where there’s discipline. Having players made accountable on and off the pitch.

“You need consequences when things aren’t going right.

“I don’t feel that there’s a fear factor from any player, that if they do something wrong, step out of line or don’t adhere to tactical strategies someone will come down hard on them.”

Ferdinand then moved onto his issues with his former side’s style of play. United have faced criticism for their style of play, with Scott McTominay particularly forceful after the Arsenal defeat.

Ferdinand pointed to Thiago Alcantara as a prime example of how Ten Hag should work. The Spaniard’s calm presence and silky passing in midfield catches the eye.

Nevertheless, he works hard under Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
