Jose Mourinho is reportedly targeting two Premier League stars for Roma with Chelsea and Manchester United midfielders Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nemanja Matic in his sights.
Mourinho has scouted well from the Premier League during his time at Roma. Indeed, one of his most important players, Tammy Abraham, was bought from the manager’s former club Chelsea.
The Portuguese also brought in Rui Patricio, from Wolves and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, on loan from Arsenal. It seems Mourinho is looking to follow suit in the next transfer window.
Tuttomercatoweb reports that he is interested in both Loftus-Cheek and Matic at Roma. Both men have played under Mourinho, Matic at both Chelsea and Manchester United, and Loftus-Cheek with the Blues.
The report suggests that Mourinho is trying to ‘convince’ Matic to join him. He is under contract at Old Trafford until next summer.
However, the move could come sooner than that. Matic’s desire to leave United at the end of the season was recently revealed, and that could play into Roma’s hands.
The potential snare of Loftus-Cheek could be more tough for the Italian side. The Chelsea midfielder is under contract until 2024, so it might take a decent offer to prise him away.
However, the 26-year-old has started just 15 games for the Stamford Bridge outfit this term.
With that being said, a decent offer could well tempt Chelsea into the sale. As such, Mourinho could potentially reunite with both Loftus-Cheek and Matic.
That would be a good development, given Roma want to ‘make a further leap forward’. Given they are fifth in Serie A at present, Mourinho will want to inspire his side to a better finish next season.
Mourinho faces competition for Loftus-Cheek
Roma are not the only Serie A side with reported interest in Loftus-Cheek. Lazio are also apparently keen on the Englishman.
What’s more, it is another former manager, Maurizio Sarri, that wants to reunite with him.
