Keown claims Man Utd interim boss Rangnick has ‘copped out’ of taking blame

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has claimed Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has ‘copped out’ of taking the blame.

Rangnick took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December with a view of taking charge until the end of the season before moving into a consultancy role.

However, Rangnick has been unable to turn around a campaign that has been filled with poor on-field performances and off-field dramas.

United will finish the season trophy less an look set to miss out of the top four after a series of poor results.

Earlier this week, Erik Ten Hag was announced as the next permanent Manchester United manager and is set to join in the summer.

The Ajax manager has been tasked with a major rebuild at Old Trafford and a number of players have already been linked with a move to the United.

Speaking ahead of United’s trip to Arsenal, Keown claimed Rangnick should have no say in the recruitment going forward and the has copped out of taking the blame.

Speaking on BT Sport, Rangick said: “Recruitment has to be linked to the new manager.

“You look at Rangnick in all of this, I don’t think he has been part of that job offer. He’s not even spoken to him [ten Hag].

“Rangnick has copped out a little bit. He’s not towed the company line. Some of things I’m hearing him say about Darren Fletcher, what’s he even doing at the club?

“There doesn’t seem to be that sort of continuity that I’d expect. So how do you do that overnight with a new manager walking through the door?”

Former United defender Ferdinand did admitted that is was ‘refreshing’ to see Rangnick’s honesty, but reiterated Keown’s point that he is trying to alleviate the blame onto others.

“He’s played his role. On one hand he’s been honest which has been refreshing to see.

“But on the same point, it’s got to the point, is he alleviating himself from having his fingerprints over such a period where…
