Eric Dier says Tottenham worringly steering away from Antonio Conte football, but makes defiant Arsenal claim

Eric Dier has admitted that Tottenham have in the past week gone away from the football which was bringing them good results.

Spurs looked like they had turned a corner with their results before and shortly after the international break. Indeed, they claimed five wins from six in the Premier League and got back in the top-four hunt.

However, Tottenham hit a stumbling block last weekend with a 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton.

And on Saturday, they showed a similar lack of quality going forward in a 0-0 draw with Brentford. In fact, Spurs had no shots on target against the Bees.

The result also saw Tottenham fail to move back above Arsenal into fourth amid the battle for next season’s Champions League.

Dier told Sky Sports: “At this stage in the season with what we’re fighting for, a point’s never enough. We came here to win and we haven’t managed to do that.

“Last week we should have finished 0-0 and we lost. Today, at least we didn’t get complacent at the other end and we left with a 0-0, which is not what we wanted but the second-best thing I guess.

“I think they made it difficult for us, but I think we made it difficult for ourselves, I don’t think we created enough chances.

“Our play wasn’t very fluid as it usually is – as it’s become under the manager.”

Dier added: “I just saw we had no shots on target again, two weeks in a row. That’s down to everyone, down to me, to everyone. It’s not just the forward players, we need to give them the ball in the right positions.

“It’s not what we expect after the way we’ve been attacking and the goals we’ve been scoring. As I said, the last few games we haven’t got into good positions and been sloppy in possession.”

Tottenham now sit fifth, two points behind Arsenal. The looming north London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is looking more and more pivotal as it approaches.
