Arsenal, Newcastle United pushing ahead in transfer battle for Serie A midfielder Fabian Ruiz

Franck Kessie, Fabian Ruiz

Fabian Ruiz is attracting Arsenal and Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window, but also has an option in Spain, reports claim.

This summer could see Fabian Ruiz leave Napoli for a new challenge after four seasons in Serie A. The former Real Betis man has been linked with a transfer away, since his contract expires in 2023.

Napoli may be best off selling him rather than allowing his deal to run down. In that event, Arsenal have regularly been mentioned as one of the sides hoping to benefit.

It will be important for Arsenal to replenish the ranks in midfield ahead of the new season. They will lose Mohamed Elneny as a free agent, for one.

That would leave them with just Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga as options in midfield. Finding another player there would help them continue their progress.

Therefore, Il Mattino remind that Arsenal have an interest in Fabian Ruiz. They have begun taking the initial steps towards a potential transfer, but there is nothing necessarily advanced as of yet.

Newcastle United, who have also been suggested as potential takers for Fabian, are also in a similar position.

The Magpies reinforced their midfield with the addition of Bruno Guimaraes in January. Now, their rich owners could make them competitive for another coveted central talent.

Previous reports, though, have suggested Fabian would favour Arsenal over them.

Atletico Madrid also interested in Fabian Ruiz

However, both Premier League clubs face competition from back in Fabian’s native Spain. From La Liga, Atletico Madrid are also showing interest.

The 26-year-old could therefore get the opportunity to return to the Spanish top-flight, unless he wants a brand new challenge in English football for the first time.

It is not yet clear how much a potential transfer for Fabian could cost any of his suitors, nor what he would be seeking as a salary. But a player of his pedigree will certainly be of interest to many clubs.
