£16.5million Bundesliga hitman Taiwo Awoniyi could be Prem bound, with West Ham among three interested sides

Taiwo Awoniyi, Union Berlin, April 2022.

West Ham are among the sides reportedly interested in Bundesliga hitman Taiwo Awoniyi – and the forward could be bound for the Premier League.

Awoniyi has been plying his trade in the Bundesliga for three seasons. The 24-year-old had loan spells with Mainz and Union Berlin, before making the switch to the latter permanently last summer.

Awoniyi has been prolific in his most recent spell in Germany. The Nigerian attacker has 13 league goals this term, making him the sixth-highest goalscorer in the Bundesliga.

He has 18 goals and three assists in all competitions for this campaign. This season is by far his best attacking return, with his best previously being 11 goals, in the 2018/19 season, when he was with Royal Excel Mouscron, in the Belgian Pro League.

He has already been established as a target for a number of Premier League sides, amid his top season. Indeed, West Ham, Newcastle United and Southampton have all been linked.

Interest from those sides have been reinforced by respected journalist Christian Falk.

Falk also claims that Awoniyi has a release clause of €20million (£16.5million). That is contrary to a recent report, that claimed sides would need to pay £25million to lure him away from Union Berlin.

A fee of £16.5million would likely not be a problem for any of the interested sides to fork out.

A return to the Premier League could, therefore, be in line for Awoniyi.

The striker was at Liverpool for about six years, but never played a game for the Reds. He went on seven different loan spells, before finding a home in Berlin.

Awoniyi could thrive for interested sides

Awoniyi could thrive in the Premier League, given his goal output this term. He could offer something to each of the sides reported to be interested.

He has longevity on his side, at just 24 years old.

West Ham could benefit from a prolific goalscorer, Michail Antonio started well, but has not scored a league goal since January. With the Hammers challenging for a top-four spot…
