Samuel Chukwueze scored a dramatic late goal as Villarreal soaked up an avalanche of Bayern Munich pressure to draw 1-1 on the night to secure a 2-1 win that booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals.
Hosts Bayern started the match as favourites, despite trailing 1-0 from last week’s first leg at El Madrigal. However, under the lights of an electric Allianz Arena, the Bundesliga champions looked to make early inroads.
However, in Villarreal they met a stubborn side determined to frustrate their hosts. To that end, the yellow wall that is Raul Albiol made an astonishing eight clearances in the opening 45.
Indeed, in a largely ineventful first half for the hosts, Bayern only managed one effort on target. That through the head of Jamal Musiala, who directed it straight at Geronimo Rulli.
As it went, it was Villarreal who came closest to extending their lead. They had two decent openings with first-leg hero Arnaut Danjuma lashing a shot wide and Gerard Moreno crashing one into the sidenetting.
Bayern though started the second half with much more intent, Leroy Sane trying a long-distance free-kick which hit the wall.
The former Man City man then teed up the game’s first big opening for Bayern, but Dayot Upamecano was unable to keep his effort on target.
Thomas Muller then lifted a chance over the bar with that kind of chance you’d normally expect the German to take.
