UCL: Chelsea's Tuchel Wants a 'Fantastic Script' Against Real Madrid

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says it would require a “fantastic script” for his side to overcome their 3-1 first-leg UEFA Champions League quarter-final deficit against Real Madrid.

The European champions go to Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday as the under-dogs given the Spanish leaders’ first-leg victory in London.

But Tuchel called on his side to quickly learn their lessons from last week’s loss where Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick.

“We need nothing else than a fantastic script if we want to be able to overcome this,” Tuchel told reporters.

“The challenge is incredibly difficult given the circumstances of the first leg. And where we play, against who we play, and the stage we play this kind of match.”

He added: “We need absolutely to learn from last weeks game. This is the beauty of the competition on this stage, that you have two matches at very short notice, so you can learn from games.

“You can use pictures and moments and situations from the first leg to learn for the second leg. This is what we try to do and this is what we will use in the preparation for this match.”

Chelsea are close to full strength with Ben Chilwell (knee) and Romelu Lukaku (Achilles) the main first-team players unavailable. The Blues beat Southampton 6-0 in the Premier League on the weekend.

Meanwhile, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged Tuchel’s words and Chelsea’s fighting spirit.

“I think they’re coming here with the intention of qualifying for the next round,” the Italian said. “They’re very aware that it’ll be difficult, but they’re going to give it a go. That’s what the spirit of football is about and big, strong teams never give up.”

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Bayern Munich will host Villarreal who won their first leg 1-0.
