FSG agree as key Mohamed Salah contract term gets green light, but worrying Liverpool rift remains

Mohamed Salah, Benfica v Liverpool April 2022

Liverpool are willing to make Mohamed Salah their highest-paid player, but both parties remain a long way off agreeing terms, a report has claimed.

The 29-year-old is almost at the end of the penultimate year of his Anfield contract, with his future still unclear. While he has been in talks with his agent and the Reds for some time, the parties have failed to reach a significant breakthrough as yet.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reiterated again on Monday that he is just happy that “the decisive parties are talking”.

And the big talking point reportedly remains Salah‘s prospective salary in his new deal.

The Egyptian wants to surpass Virgil van Dijk as the highest earner in the Liverpool squad. The Reds, though, fear a domino effect within the camp if they break their wage structure.

According to 90min, Liverpool’s Fenway Sports Group (FSG) owners have agreed that Salah should the highest-paid player at Anfield.

They are willing to offer the winger £300,000 per week. Salah, though, supposedly wants £400,000 per week and Liverpool are unwilling to go that far.

From the player’s perspective, he is only demanding what he thinks he is worth.

Salah has established himself as one of the Premier League’s – and Europe’s – best players in his time at Anfield. He also realises that at 29, his next contract is the last big one of his career.

As a result, 90min reports that Liverpool remain ‘some way apart’ over the contract terms.
