Everton plunged deeper into relegation mire as Cornet fires Burnley to dramatic late win

Nathan-Collins Burney v Everton April 2022

Maxwel Cornet scored with five minutes to go as Burnley snatched a vital 3-2 win over Everton to move within one point of the visitors in the battle for survival.

Burnley had taken the lead through Nathan Collins’ first goal for the club. He netted at the far post from a corner. But Frank Lampard’s men hit back quickly with penalties in the 18th and 41st minutes.

Burnley levelled after half-time when Jay Rodriguez netted from close range before Cornet sent Turf Moor wild.

Sean Dyche brought Rodriguez and Cornet into an attacking line up for goal-shy Burnley’s crunch clash.

Dyche made three changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Manchester City on Saturday. Rodriguez partnered Wout Weghorst up front while Cornet replaced Dwight McNeil on the left.

Collins returned from suspension in place of Kevin Long at the back.

Frank Lampard made two changes to the Everton side beaten at West Ham.

Jarrad Branthwaite came into defence to replace the suspended Michael Keane, while Anthony Gordon started ahead of Demarai Gray. Fabian Delph and Seamus Coleman were both among the substitutes.

Burnley were rewarded for a strong start at Turf Moor and took the lead in the 12th minute.

Cornet sent in a corner from the right and Collins was on hand at the far post.

But Burnley’s joy was short-lived. Only four minutes after Collins’ goal, Ashley Westwood tugged at Anthony Gordon as he broke into the box and Mike Dean pointed to the spot.

Richarlison’s run-up was exaggerated but did the trick as he sent Nick Pope the wrong way to level the scores.

Everton were awarded a second penalty five minutes before the break. Vitalii Mykolenko raced on to Alex Iwobi’s through-ball and tried to spin away from Aaron Lennon, who caught his foot with an out-stretched boot.

Mike Dean initially waved play on but was sent to the screens after a VAR check and pointed to the spot.

Richarlison stepped up and again sent Pope the wrong way to put Everton in front.
