The 2022 World Cup has kicked off in Qatar as sides bid to succeed France as the new champions of the world.
Among the favourites this year are Brazil, Argentina, England and holders France, with the tournament the first of its kind to be held in the Middle East.
Off-field controversies have dogged the build-up and tournament proper so far as teams consider how best to protest Qatar’s human rights record, treatment of migrant workers and views on LGBTQ+ people.

FIFA has confirmed the first two rounds of matches will kick off at 1pm, 4pm, 7pm and 10pm local time (10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm in the UK and 5am, 8am, 11pm and 2pm US ET).
Kick-off times in the final round of group games and knock-out round matches will be at 6pm and 10pm local time (3pm and 7pm UK time and 10am and 2pm US ET).
The final is scheduled to kick off at 6pm local time (3pm UK time and 10am ET).
