No Man Utd homecoming for Ruud van Nistelrooy as he takes up PSV post

Any hopes Manchester United fans had of seeing Ruud Van Nistelrooy back at Old Trafford has been scuppered after the Dutchman agreed a deal with PSV Eindhoven.

Van Nistelrooy, who has legendary status at Old Trafford, has signed a three-year deal to become PSV’s manager from this summer. The 45-year-old had been tipped to return to United this summer. Reports, via the Daily Express, had claimed that United officials were keen to bring in a Dutch coach with knowledge of English football if they appointed Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag is understood to have been interviewed for the role to succeed Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United.

However, Van Nistelrooy, who has worked with various age-group teams at the Eredivisie club and was also Holland’s assistant at the European Championships last summer, is now not an option.

Van Nistelrooy, who retired as a player in 2012, will replace current boss Roger Schmidt. Schmidt, 55, will leave at the expiration of his contract at the end of the season.

“It has always been my dream to be head coach at PSV,” former forward Van Nistelrooy told the official club website.
