Rutgers men’s soccer incoming class heavy on MLS academy prospects

Rutgers men’s soccer lands transfer Georgetown forward

It was a very solid third season under head coach Jim McElderry, as the men’s soccer program took a very clear and defined next step. The program even was ranked at the midpoint of the season after a very strong start to the out-of-conference schedule and the Big Ten campaign.

The Scarlet Knights finished the season 9-6-2 (3-4-1 Big Ten) and had signature wins over a ranked Indiana and a blowout 4-0 win over Ohio State to close out the regular season.

At the core of the eight incoming players are four who are part of prominent MLS academies. Two players hail from the Philadelphia Union Academy, one of the best academies in the nation.

Players also hail from the New York Red Bulls Academy, Portland Timbers Academy as well as Met Oval and PDA.

Since McElderry was hired by Rutgers three years ago, he has placed a greater emphasis on recruiting MLS academies.

Two players have also come in via the college system as transfers.

“My staff and I are very excited about this group of new players joining our team for the 2022 season,” McElderry said in a statement.

“I want to thank my staff for their hard work this year. Since arriving at Rutgers, we have put an emphasis on attracting the top players in New Jersey to Rutgers. This year is no different as we feel we have four of the best players in New Jersey choosing to represent their state university: MD Meyers, Ian Abbey, Nestor Cabrera, and Evan Gomillion.

“We are excited to welcome four players from outside the state: Cole Cruthers from Oregon, Sam Delgado from Maryland, William Baker from New York City, and Nick Spittle from Toronto, Canada. All eight of these student-athletes fit well into our positional needs and will add to the positive culture of our returning group.
